History of the Breitling Watch Company

Hand watch. Face. Leads. Close up.

If you are thinking about getting a Breitling luxury watch, it is a good idea to learn a bit about the history of the brand first. As with so many companies that make fine watches, they are a Swiss brand founded all the way back in 1884 by Leon Breitling. The company has a number of wonderful luxury watch models, and since 2000, they’ve offered certified chronometers for all of the models. The company has three categories or families of watches, including their SuperOcean watches for diving, Navtimer watches for Aviation, and their Breitling for Bentley luxury watches. They are one of the most popular and successful watch companies making timepieces today.

Small Beginnings Led to Great Things

The company actually started in just a small workshop more than a hundred and thirty years ago. The company started when Leon began making chronographs and precision counters. Within six years, the offices relocated to La Chaux de Fonds. At that time, the city was where quite a few other Swiss watchmakers were working. When Leon passed away in 1914, his son Gaston took over, and within a year created the first wristwatch chronograph. This innovation gave watch making a huge boost, and the developments kept on coming from the company. They created the first independent chronograph push piece.

The company continued to grow, and in 1932, Willy, Gaston’s son, took over the business. When WWII started in 1936, Breitling started supplying watches to pilots in the Royal Air Force. In fact, they were the official supplier. When the United States entered the fray, Breitling offered their watches to the American pilots as well. As the decades passed, the company kept on innovating and expanding. An astronaut, Scott Carpenter, even wore one of their watches into space on the Aurora 7 space capsule.

The company kept making great leaps in technology and watch making over the years, perfecting the craft and coming up with new and interesting types of watch styles. They currently have their headquarters in Grenchen, Switzerland, where they produce all of the watches that they then ship around the world to retailers. One of the things that many buyers like is the fact that they do all of their work in house. Many of the top Swiss brands are doing this, as it helps to ensure quality through every step of the process.

A Luxury Watch You Can Trust

Today, these watches are some of the most sought after and beloved in the world. They are popular with celebrities and everyone considered the upper crust of society. The company still has a strong relationship with the armed forces because of their quality, reliability, and durability. The strength of the company is in the strength of their watches.

People who are buying luxury timepieces want to know they have a watch they can trust and that will last a long time. When you take great care of your watch, and give it the proper maintenance it needs, it can last for many years without a problem.

Those who are considering buying one of these watches from Breitling should take the time to look at all of the different options they have across their different categories. Whether you are the adventurous sort, or just someone who wants to have a nice watch when going out on special occasions, they have something to offer.

Because of the brand’s popularity though, they are popular for counterfeiters as well. Be careful when you are buying one of these watches, and make sure you get one from a legitimate seller. If you see a deal that is too good to be true, it is probably a scam.
